TOKYO (Thomson Financial) - Japanese electronics giant Toshiba Corp and Japan's largest liquid crystal display (LCD) panel maker Sharp Corp announced Friday they have decided to ally in the LCD panel business.

The decision comes on the heels of stiffer competition in the flat-TV segment, with South Korean and Taiwanese brands making known their presence on the global market to take advantage of their price competitiveness.

Under an agreement reached today, Toshiba (other-otc: TOSBF.PK - news - people ) will start procuring large LCD panels from Sharp starting in the year to March 2009.

In the year to March 2011, Toshiba will buy some 40 percent of its LCD panels from Sharp, with screen sizes of more than 32 inches, to make its Regza LCD
