Picked up the 55" A1E today from Best Buy.

Set it up this evening. I'm replacing my 52" XBRHX909.

All I can say is I've never seen anything like it. I spent all evening doing the initial setup and am exhausted. I will post more images tomorrow. Here's a little teaser.

Design:

As you know design is very subjective. Some people like large bezels on the TV as it gives them a cinematic feeling from the equipment. The A1E has very minimalistic design. It seems Sony looked to a Bauhaus design credo when designing the set i.e. "form follows function". Sony obviously wants you to focus on the picture and the picture only. That's why there is virtually no bezel. In fact there is virtually no bulk to the TV. The stand is very well designed and solidly built. You will never feel like the TV is going to tip over. The connections are thoughtfully designed and cable management is fantastic with clips that keep cables together just below where they connect. The angle on the screen is so minimal that I barely noticed. I'm posting pics of my before and after setup so you can see how the TV creates a greater sense of space. I moved up from a XBR52HX909 (FALD 240 Hz)to this 55" A1E and was shocked how much less spatial area this tv takes up.

Inputs:

I setup my PVR on HMDI3/ARC. When I was initially setting up the TV sometimes I got a picture from my 4k PVR, sometimes I got snow. I noticed I had switched on the "Enhanced HDMI" option in the settings menu and that was what was causing the problem. As mentioned by a couple of people above. HDMI ports 2 and 3 are the only inputs that support "Enhanced HDMI" which supports inputs at 4k 60p, 4:2:0 10bit, 4:4:4 and 4:2:2. I have no idea what the last two sets of numbers mean. So my 4k PVR for some reason doesn't provide a high enough quality signal to satisfy this setting. On the other hand my Xbox One S immediately recognized the higher quality connection and offered to change settings accordingly. The only setting I had to manually change was to change the bit depth to 10 bit. The PS4 also recognized the updated connection automatically. So my final setup ended up as HDMI 1: Apple TV/ HDMI 2: PS4/ HDMI 3: XBOX One S/ HDMI 4: 4k PVR Cable box.

Picture Quality:

I have Bell Fibe TV at home which provides Fibre Optic cable right into my home (FTTH). The Fibre comes out of my wall and into my router which then connects to the PVR via ethernet.

HD sources are beautifully upscaled but I would say that one definitely needs to calibrate the TV in order to get the best out of it. Maybe I'm just not used to seeing colours pop like they do on this screen but sometimes I find the picture too warm. Red's and Blue's pop like nothing else and it can be jarring. I also watched the latest episode of Better Call Saul last night and was just stunned by the contrast. I have turned the brightness down to 35 (MAX 50) otherwise it burns my eyes. 4k Broadcast Sources look outstanding. This is the first time I've seen 4k and I'm blown away. I watched some 4k Hockey Broadcasts last night and could actually see the scratches on the ice from the skates. Netflix 4k UHD and Amazon Prime 4k UHD also look amazing. I tested "The Grand Tour" on Amazon Prime, the episode where they are in dune buggies in Namibia and it felt like I was there.

I have just ordered the Alien Anthology on Blue Ray and am going to test the 4k Transfers of Alien and Aliens through my Xbox One S. Those films are extremely dark so I'm sure it will provide adequate black level torture tests. Just in time for Alien Covenant.

Sound:

My TV is connected to a Sonos 5.1 setup via optical cable which includes a Playbar, a Sub and 2 Play 1's for the rear channels. Going through the advanced settings in the 'Sound Adjustment' menu the TV recommended that I set 'Dolby Digital Plus' setting to 'Dolby Digital' only if I was using optical out. The sound coming out of my Sonos is marginally better under this TV as compared to the old one using the same Sonos setup. This might change as I test more material. I did not test the built in speakers as I don't intend to use them. The nice thing is that I can use the TV remote to control the Sonos volume and use the volume bar on the TV. This was not possible on my old TV.

So all in all so far I am ecstatic to take the leap into 4K and OLED. The TV is fantastic.
