I bought this expecting a basic streamer. It worked well after a simple setup to get on my wifi network.
At the same time, I went down the rabbit hole of upgrading home speakers. I wanted to explore better options than Spotify sound quality. That led me to try Tidal to try to improve my source. Using Tidal for a source, WiiM mini was only giving 44.1khz non-MQA to my external DAC. I tried various setting on my source devices/apps and I was starting to lose hope that this would provide MQA to my system. I even ordered a more expensive streamer to try, but luckily
I took a second dive in to the WiiM app settings and I found that WITH SPECIFIC SETTINGS this will actually work for high bit/frequency MQA output to my MQA compatible DAC (Cambridge Audio DACMagic 200M). One of the keys is you have to set it to fixed volume output.
Also, there were issues with Tidal Connect stability with the default setting. The Tidal app, whether on phone or PC, would lose control and require a TIDAL or WiiM restart to do anything, even stop the music. Selecting the WiiM app option option of 5Ghz only WiFi seems to have resolved all these issues. (I have a new ASUS multiband wifi system with 2 access points, so this probably depends on your specific network.)
Anyway, the WiiM mini is a basic functional product out of the box, but also has some ability to tweak it for more sophisticated applications.
Maybe someday all funtions will be plug and play, but for now - kudos to WiiM for the functionality of the device and app to allow setting tweaks.
