¿por qué no escalar directamente con ffdshow a 1080, aplicar el sharpen, y luego ya no tener que volver a escalar con madVR?

Eso es lo que se recomienda, escalar a la resolución final y aplicar posteriormente un sharpen mas o menos fuerte según tus necesidades. En la guía ofrece diferentes opciones y mirando el antes y el después de las capturas parece que le gusta bastante el realzado de nitidez y no le molesta el ringing. Si tenemos en cuenta lo que comenta en la sección de ffdshow:

[...] sharpen will be applied to the original resolution of the video which results in a lower quality.

Use the filter "Resize" of ffdshow and multiply by 1.5 the resolution of the video. This is a good compromise because it allows you to apply the "sharpen" in a resolution not too far from the original.

Podemos interpretar que no le desagrada aplicar el sharpen en un resolución intermedia entre la original y la destino en el caso de SD.

Al final depende del sharpen que utilices, el algoritmo de escalado, tu gusto personal, tu configuración software/hardware, etc. por eso hay gente que prefiere aplicar el sharpen en preresize, otros en postresize, etc.

Ok, this is rather strong sharpening (probably too strong), using some AviSynth algorithms. But it nicely shows how sharpening after upscaling works much better than sharpening before upscaling - at least when using NNEDI3.

I don't think I should recommend whether sharpening should be used or not. I think everybody should decide for himself. I do think when using large upscaling factors, some sharpening might make sense to get rid of the softness caused by upscaling.

No te extrañe que uilizara una configuración que no se puede ejecutar al vuelo, el objetivo era ilustrar el porqué no es recomendable aplicar sharpen antes de escalar.
